The '''KABA Gemini''' is a [[UL 437]] rated [[dimple]] lock designed by [[KABA]] and manufactured by the Lori Corporation of Connecticut, USA. The Gemini uses three rows of dimple pins oriented at 4, 8, and 12 o'clock in the [[plug]]. The Gemini is one of the few pure [[pin-tumbler]] locks that is protected against [[key bumping]] by design.

The [[Sargent KESO]] lock is functionally equivalent to the Gemini.

== Principles of operation ==

The Gemini functions like a standard dimple lock, but it has three sets of active pin-tumblers. The key is bitted on the sides and edges of the blade and is reversible. The lock itself is a combination of cylinder and inner core, with a core retaining screw at 1 o'clock.

Bottom pins are lightly spooled to deter [[lockpicking]], and mushroom bottom pins are available. Factory standards dictate 2-4 mushroom pins be used in each cylinder. The 4 and 8 o'clock pin chambers in the lock (and cuts on the key) are slanted upward at a 15 degree angle. This helps prevent against [[key bumping]] and unauthorized duplication. There are 6 six chambers in the 8 o'clock position and 5 in the 4 o'clock position. Both have four pin depths available for bottom (key) pins. There are three depths and 10 positions available for pins in the 12 o'clock chambers, but the first position (nearest the bow) is not used. Positions 3, 5, 7, and 9 are used in traditional systems, and 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 in [[master key]] systems.<ref>Phillips, Bill. The '''Smart Key''' (or '''SmartKey''') is a user-rekeyable [[wafer]] lock made by [[Kwikset]] and [[Weiser]] (Canada). The Smart Key was Kwikset's response to the media frenzy concerning key bumping, specifically to address the weaknesses of their traditional [[pin-tumbler]] cylinders. == Principles of Operation ==

The Smart Key uses five wafers that can be set to six positions each, giving it a total of 7,776 (6<sup>5</sup>) [[Differs|key differs]]. This number is drastically reduced because of poor tolerances that accept half cuts at every position, reducing the number of real differs to 243 (3<sup>5</sup>). Unlike traditional wafer locks, the Smart Key's user-rekeying ability heavily modifies the internals of the lock. Instead of the key directly interacting with the wafers, it interacts with a series of guide pins. The guide pins hook into the wafers at different levels (depending on the bitting of each wafer) to raise them to the proper position.

Wafers provide pick resistance in the form of serrations on the side of the wafer that engages the sidebar. Because the lock is not [[pin-tumbler]] based, it is also not subject to [[key bumping]] attacks.

When the user wants to rekey the lock, the working key is used to rotate the plug 90&deg; clockwise. A special tool known as the "Smart Key" is used on the small hole to the left of the keyway. This physically disengages the sidebar and wafers from the guide pins and allows the working key to be removed. A new key can be inserted and the plug rotated back to the default position. When this is done, the sidebar and wafers slide back onto the new position of the guide pins, and rekeys the lock.

==Formatting==

Lockwiki runs on MediaWiki, so check out MediaWiki's [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Editing Help:Editing] page. The general format for Lockwiki pages is a title, short summary, and subsequent sections of various key points of the topic. Inline images may be used, depending on the content of the article.

== Editing ==

General guidelines for editing pages:

* Only link the first instance of a keyword on a page, and only if it is a major or relevant topic.
* When linking, use substitute text to remove any strange characters. For example, [[Legal_Issues|Legal Issues]] not [[Legal_Issues]].
* When creating a new page, use underscores (_) instead of spaces for the page name.
* Avoid overlinking (the use of too many non-major or irrelevant page links).
* Avoid overcategorization (the use of too many unecessary categories).
* Use an include for pages that use large charts/tables. ([[Legal_Issues|Legal Issues]] is a good example.)

; Changes to your edits are not personal attacks

The '''Exec''' is a [[disc-detainer]] lock made by [[Abloy]]. The Exec uses between 9 and 11 discs that interface with a [[sidebar]]. It is a modified version of the [[Abloy Disklock]] that includes a Disk Steering System (DSS) designed to protect against [[lockpicking]]. Unlike the Disklock, the Exec only allows the key to be turned one direction. As such, it is primarily used in [[padlock]]s and [[cam lock]]s. The Exec model uses an 'H' shaped keyway.

The Exec is a newer form of the [[Abloy Profile]] and [[Abloy Disklock]]. It has since been superceded by the [[Abloy Protec]].

== Principles of operation ==

The Exec works by using angled bitting cuts on the key to properly rotate discs. The key is inserted and rotated 90&deg;; the angled cuts on the key in rotate the discs in the lock. If all the discs are rotated to the correct position the sidebar can fall into the discs and the [[plug]] can be rotated. Washers are placed between discs to ensure that the key rotates each disc individually. The main advantage of the Exec is the use of a Disk Steering System (DSS) that requires the key to be fully inserted before the plug can rotate. This is the precursor to the Disk Blocking System (DBS) used in the [[Abloy Protec]].

There are six positions available for discs (designated 0-5), at 18&deg; increments between 0&deg; and 90&deg;. In an eleven disc lock, there are 10,077,696 (6<sup>9</sup>) theoretical key [[differs]]. Two of the eleven discs are always 0 cuts that control the Disk Steering System.

Discs provide manipulation resistance in the form of false gates. In addition, they may use a modified cut-out shape to deter the use of improperly shaped tools.<ref>Fey, Han. 2005. [http://toool.nl/images/f/f3/Abloypart2.pdf Evolution of Abloy (part 2)].</ref> The first disc in the lock is made of hardened steel and is free-floating. This provides drill resistance as well as [[lockpicking]] resistance.

The Disk Steering System (DSS) works with two dimples on each side of the key blade. When the key is fully inserted two sliding pieces inside the plug are pushed into the key. This allows the plug to rotate as well as prevents the key from being removed when the plug is rotated.

The sidebar is L shaped to prevent drilling and removal attacks.
