| maker = CompX
}}

The TuBAR is a dual-sidebar lock made by CompX Chicago. It is distinguished for being one of the few cam locks to use a sidebar without major modifications to the sidebar mechanism. The TuBAR was originally produced by Chicago Lock Co., which has since become CompX Chicago.

The TuBAR is easy to identify because of the visible pins arranged in two rows of four in the center of the plug. The TuBAR is commonly mistaken for an oddly arranged tubular pin-tumbler lock.

__TOC__

Principles of operation
The TuBAR uses eight pins arranged in two rows of four down the vertical length of the keyway. Each pin has a tapered end surrounded by a spring at the bottom of the pin chamber. Two sidebars are used at 3 and 9 o'clock in the plug, and each set of four pins uses a different sidebar. When the correct key is used, each pin is moved so that it's true gate is lined up with the sidebar, allowing the sidebar to retract and the plug to rotate. The sidebar is a two piece assembly of a bar and a crescent. The flat part of the crescent enters the gates on the pins while the bar restricts plug movement until the sidebar is retracted.

There are seven positions for true gates, at 0.025" increments between 0.175" and 0.325" from the tip of the pin. Each pin has one or more false gates which are too shallow to allow the sidebar to retract. The false gates provide resistance to lockpicking attacks. The high spring tension on pins pushes each sidebar into the cylinder walls; the sidebars have no independent spring mechanism.

Above the plug a profiling cap is used to make sure the key is inserted properly. The TuBAR is warded so that the key can only be inserted in one orientation. The profile cap is free-spinning and helps provide resistance to drilling attacks, too. When the plug is rotated the key is held in place by a protrusion that goes through a hole in the blade.

<div align="center"><gallery>
File:Tubar_key.jpg|The TuBAR key
File:Tubar_plug_sidebar.jpg|TuBAR plug and one sidebar.
File:Tubar_pins_close.jpg|Closeup of false and true gates on each pin.
File:Tubar_sidebar_aligned.jpg|True gates of each pin properly aligned.
</gallery></div>

Construction
The cylinder is sintered steel, and the plug brass. The pins, sidebar components, and profile cap are made of hardened steel. The key is made of steel with a plastic bow.

Disassembly instructions
The TuBar is relatively easy to disassemble.

# Tap out and remove the retaining rod at the rear of the cylinder.
# Push the plug and profile cap out of the cylinder.

Vulnerabilities
The TuBAR may be vulnerable to the following attacks:

* Lockpicking
* Impressioning
* Decoding

Notes
* Visual decoding of the true gates of deep-setting pins can be done with the naked eye.
History
BEST Lock Company was founded in Seattle, Washington in 1920, after filing the patent for the first small format interchangeable core lock. The lock core was called a Universal Interchangeable Lock, because the same core could be put into a padlock, door lever (handle), knob, and other types of locks as they came into common use.

The term Small Format Interchangeable Core (SFIC) was coined by the Schlage Lock Company, to differentiate the IC from Best from Schlage's own lock which used normal sized keys and pins and was therefore called Schlage's Full Size Interchangeable Core FSIC lock cylinder. To this day, Schlage still refers to it's interchangeable core as FSIC. As other manufacturers started to make IC lock cylinders, the term Large Format Interchangeable Core (LFIC) became common.

The Yale 850 Padlock is a pin-tumbler padlock made by Yale. It is a solid body padlock with an inner cylinder.

This padlock cylinder is a pin-tumbler lock. The key only turns clockwise to open the lock.

Disassembly instructions
This padlock cannot be disassembled non-destructively. However, there are only two pins which need the heads drilled off for disassembly. The pins can be replaced.

Unlock the padlock, then drill the heads off the body retaining pins.

Use a drift punch to drive out the pins.

Lift up the lock body.

Remove the shackle retaining pin, located here.

Pull shackle out and lift off lock body.

Remove plug retaining plate screw and plate.

Push plug down slightly to release locking dogs.

Locking dogs in released position due to plug being lowered.

Remove locking dogs and springs by sliding them outwards.

Remove shackle spring.

Use a follower to push out the plug.

Remove actuator by lifting it off the end of the plug.

Remove follower and sort out pins onto tray. You will notice that the key pins have heavy wear. The driver pins are not worn - that is how the factory used to hand-make mushroom driver pins.

New retainer pins look like this.

Slide them into place after reassembly.

Flip the lock over and you will see the ends of the retainer pins sticking out.

At this time, you would hammer the ends of the retainer pins so they mushroom out, tightening both sides. Then you would file the excess off and sand them flat to blend them into the lock body.

Yale is an American lock manufacturer that produces low and medium security padlocks, lock cylinders, and electronic locks. Yale is best know for originating the common pin-tumbler design in the 1800s. This basic design is still in use today.

Yale is part of the ASSA-Abloy group.

__TOC__

History
Yale's origins date back to the 1840s when Linus Yale, Sr. opened the Yale Lock Shop in Newport, New York. Yale focused on handmade bank locks, patenting a variety of combination lock designs. He also redesigned the Egyptian pin-tumbler design, the basis for modern pin-tumblers. Yale's son, Linus Yale, Jr., went on to continue his fathers work. He improved on the design of the pin-tumbler lock and in 1868 formed the Yale Lock Manufacturing Company with Henry Robinson Towne. The duo used the Yale patents to design a variety of door locks and padlocks.

In 1929 Yale purchased H. and T. Vaughan Ltd, in England. In 2000 Yale was purchased by the ASSA-Abloy group. Since then the company name has simply been "Yale."

The Yale lock began with the original flat trefoil key which was superseded by the corrugated key in 1882 which itself was replaced by the paracentric key in 1892.

Trivia: Linus Yale Sr. is a distant relative of Elihu Yale, who was an early benefactor and namesake of Yale University. Although both Yale locks and Yale University are both located in the state of Connecticut (USA), there is no business relationship between the two.

John Junkunc was a railroad employee who had a habit of losing keys. He then designed and made a combination lock so he could avoid the problem of losing keys.

One of his early versions next to a quarter for scale:

These early Junkunc combination padlocks had gates that lined up directly with the shackle. If someone were to try decoding the combination like a modern lock by pulling the shackle while dialing, the 'wheels' would become deformed as well as the shackle.

Normally, this problem can be identified by a dial that binds and is very hard to turn at a certain point, but turns freely for the rest of the dial rotation. (Similar to a bent spindle on a safe lock).

GWiens2001:

Among the largest of the American padlocks, the 747 came in two varieties. This lock is only available with a protected shackle. From the front, aside from logos which changed over the years, the 747 looks the same.

The difference between the two varieties is in how the lock is taken apart. One version has a sliding piece of metal on the bottom, the other has a screw-retained core retainer and small metal shield.

Both versions came as default with a 'restricted' keyway.

The screw-retained core version comes apart as follows:

Remove the screw from the shackle toe hole

Retainer is now removed.

Sliding core protector is next.

Now the core.

Press down on the shackle to ease tension on the locking balls, and tap lock on hard surface to remove the cam. The locking balls will fall out once the cam is removed.

Side view and top view of the locking cam.

Now remove the shackle retaining screw. This comes from the factory filled with a grey epoxy (like J.B. Weld). Use a pointed pick to remove the epoxy, then an allen wrench to remove the screw.

The shackle and spring now can be lifted out of the lock.
