The d12 is a medium security pin tumbler made by ASSA for residential or commercial use. It is intended as a successor to the ASSA 700 series which dates back to 1948. It features six pins and numerous security improvements over the original cylinder, including a paracentric keyway and patented key profiles.
Disassembly instructions
There are two main assemblies this lock can be found in which will vary by branding and format. One uses a C-clip on the back on the plug while the other uses a large retaining screw.

If the lock uses the retaining screw:

# Unscrew the Torx screw on the tailpiece and remove the wafer beneath it.
# Unscrew the retaining screw from the rear of the plug.
# Unscrew and remove the closing rod over the pin chambers (be careful not to allow springs to escape).
# Remove the driver pins and springs. They are all the same so there is no need to keep them in order. Key pins cannot fit through the top chambers.
# Slide the plug out of the housing.

Disassembly using a follower is possible but not recommended due to the threads on the back of the plug that accept the retaining screw.

If the lock uses a C-clip:

# Remove the C-clip.
# Insert the key and turn the plug 45-90 degrees.
# Withdraw the plug from the cylinder. (A plug follower is recommended)

The CX-5 (or CX5) is a UL 437 rated pin-tumbler lock made by CX5 Security in South Korea. It uses six pin-tumblers and five springless side pins which interface with a sidebar. The CX-5 is functionally identical to the earlier Scanlock design.

The CX-5 is distributed (and sometimes rebranded) by a number of lock manufacturers, such as Marks USA in the United States. The CX-5 was originally sold by Scorpion and distributed by Can-Am Door Hardware, Inc. It has since been rebranded as "CX5" (no dash) by Far Pro Security Solutions and sold through CX5 Security of Canada/South Korea.

__TOC__

Principles of operation
The CX-5 uses six pin-tumblers and a sidebar as primary locking components. In function, it is similar to other sidebar-based pin-tumblers, particularly the ASSA Twin 6000 and the Mul-T-Lock MT5+. Both pin-tumblers and sidebar finger pins must be properly positioned to rotate the plug. The CX-5 allows for ten pin-tumbler sizes, for a total of 1,000,000 (106) theoretical key differs. Given a MACS of 6, the real number of key differs is closer to 400,000 for any given sidebar bitting. Driver (top) pins are spooled to frustrate lockpicking attacks. The spool design is similar to those used in the ASSA Twin 6000.

The sidebar is made of steel and positioned at 9 o'clock in the plug. The sidebar interfaces with five finger pins of four possible depths, giving the CX-5 a total of 1024 (45) theoretical sidebar differs. Each finger pin has one true gate and one false (shallow) gate. The key has a milled track on the left hand side that picks up the legs of each finger pins and properly positions their true gates. Finger pins are left springless to promote longevity of the key track and the finger pin legs.

<div align="center"><gallery>
File:Scorpion CX5 sidebar misaligned.jpg|Sliders misaligned.
</gallery></div>

Notes
* Pin-tumbler bitting codes are designated 0 (0.339") to 9 (0.204"), jumping in incremenents of 0.015".

Disassembly instructions
The CX-5 can be disassembled in the same way as a standard pin-tumbler lock. When a key is not inserted into the exposed plug the springless finger pins and sidebar will fall out of the plug.

Vulnerabilities
The CX-5 may be vulnerable to one of more of the following:

* Lockpicking
* Key bumping
* Impressioning
* Decoding

Notes
* Key bumping is only possible given a bump key with the correct sidebar bitting.
The Twin (or Twin 6000) is a UL 437-rated pin-tumbler lock made by ASSA. The 6000 is part of the Twin series of locks that use pin-tumblers and a sidebar to provide two layers of security. The 6000 is the original Twin series model. Later systems made by ASSA built upon the 6000 to provide increased security against manipulation and key duplication.

The 6000 has since been superceded by other Twin series models, particularly the ASSA Twin V-10 and ASSA Twin Combi.

The 6000 uses six pin-tumbler pins and five sidebar finger pins. To open the lock, all pin-tumblers must be aligned at the shear line and all finger pins must be properly aligned with the sidebar legs. Balanced pin stacks are used to resist attack from comb picks as well as reduces wear on the springs. Driver pins come in four sizes and use a modified spool design which is combined with counter-milling in the plug chambers to provide high pick resistance. There are nine depths for pin-tumblers, allowing for 531,441 (96) theoretical key differs for the pin-tumbler portion of the lock. The MACS for this lock is five depths, giving the 6000 around 160,000 real key differs. Master keying is available using traditional pin-tumbler master pins available in eight sizes.

Unlike many other sidebar locks, the Twin 6000 finger pins are identical. Cuts are made on the sidebar directly and finger pins must be raised to match these positions. All finger pins use serrations above and below the true gate to provide manipulation resistance. Rekeying of the sidebar portion of the lock is only possibly when the sidebar is physically replaced or flipped upside-down. This interaction between finger pins and sidebar gates frustrates traditional decoding attacks that attempt to measure the range of movement of the finger pins. There are five depths available for finger pins, giving the Twin 3,125 theoretical sidebar differs (55). There are 2,800 real sidebar differs, using 1400 sidebars that can be flipped in either orientation. Keys blanks are stamped with a three digit indirect sidebar bitting code and sometimes an additional two digit keyway code.

To provide resistance against destructive entry, the 6000 uses hardened steel pins in the front of the plug and near the sidebar and third and fourth pin-stacks. In addition, driver pins are made of stainless steel to frustrate drilling of the pin stacks.

The Sargent Signature is a pin-tumbler lock made by Sargent. It uses side pins and two sidebars in addition to its regular six pin-tumblers. It is sold as a "security" tier lock, intended to provide increased key control and resistance against picking. It can be integrated into existing Sargent systems as Signature keys are backwards compatible with ordinary Sargent locks.

It is easily identified by the quill on the left side of the plug face.

__TOC__

Principles of Operation
The Sargent Signature uses six pin-tumblers and six side pins that interface with two sidebars located at 5 and 7 'o clock. All six pin-tumblers and six side pins must be set to the correct depth for the lock to open. The side pins are installed with three on the left side of the plug and three on the right. They move perpendicular to the top pins, matching with dimple cuts on the sides of the key. Grooves are cut at varying depths along the side pins. When the side pin is set to the correct depth, the sidebars can be depressed into them, allowing the plug to turn.

The pin-tumbler portion of the lock uses identical pinning specifications to standard Sargent cylinders. There are 10 possible cuts with a MACS of 5, giving 1,000,000 (106) theoretical key differs for the pin-tumbler portion of the lock. Master keying is available for the pin-tumbler portion. Top (driver) pins are all standard, however, stainless steel spooled pins are available for UL437 versions.

The side pins are installed in the factory in three of five possible positions between the pin chambers, at 4 and 8 o' clock on the plug. They are not removeable nondestructively. In addition, there are two side pins installed at the very front of the plug intended to block non-signature keys from being inserted. These "blocking pins" are identical to the other side pins, except they do not interact with the sidebar. Signature keys have two small slopes cut on either side of the very tip of the key in a wedge shape to depress these pins as the key is inserted. There are no false gates cut on the side pins; however, the tips are narrowed to prevent them from entering too far into the keyway, and this may act as such if the pins are depressed too far.

Steel inserts are used to increase resistance to forced entry. Two roll pins are installed in front of the pinstacks in the plug, and a crescent shaped disc is set into the 12 o' clock position on the housing to protect the upper pin chambers. The sidebars are made out of steel. In addition, some bottom pins may be made of steel.

Notes
* Dimple cuts on the key are done at the factory, similar to other sidebar designs such as the ASSA Twin 6000 or the Schlage Primus.

Disassembly instructions
The Sargent Signature can be disassembled in the same way as a standard pin-tumbler lock. The two sidebars will fall out when the plug is removed from the housing.

Notes
* Two small dimples drilled on the back end of the housing in a figure-8 shape indicate that the pin chambers may be top-loaded by removing the retaining cover.

Vulnerabilities
The Sargent Signature may be vulnerable to one of more of the following:

* Lockpicking
* Key bumping
* Impressioning
