The [[Goal|GOAL]] V18 utilizes [[dimple]] keys but functions the same as a standard [[pin-tumbler]] lock. The lock uses 21 chambers for pin-tumbler stacks. Up to nineteen of those chambers each contain a set of key pin, driver, and spring. The dimple key of the V18 has four cut depths for side pins and three, different cut depths for pins in the top row. The design offers 12 billion [[Differs|key differences]] when pinned with 18 active pins. The key is bitted on the sides and edges of the blade and is reversible. To open the lock, all active pin-tumblers -- across all three rows of pins -- must be aligned at the [[shear line]]. GOAL utilizes a variety of [[security pin]]s to deter picking. Active pin stacks incorporate seven total lengths of stainless steel key pins with two sizes of steel driver pins to match. The V18 uses a mix of thin and thick lipped mushroom spool drivers. Drivers are cupped to allow the spring to nest inside the pins. Key pins are a combination of t-pins and multi-section tapered spools which are torpedo shaped to create overset traps. These pin designs match overmilling of the pin chambers in the core to catch pins as they are lifted to shear. The top row of pin chambers in the bible is taller than the side rows in larger models of the V18. Brass spacer pins are placed above the spring to match the increase length of the pin chambers.

Two of the chambers, one on each side, contain a sprung bearing or "click ball" to bias the core. This core-centering mechanism consists of a pin with a concave top which sits in the core without entering the keyway and a ball bearing which sits in the bible. This click device acts as a detent when the key aligns the core to the locked position.  Centering pin stacks are also distinguishable by their shorter and wider springs. The core-biasing bearings are always located one each on the left and right side of the lock, but the location within each row can vary.

Additionally, the V18 uses two, smaller "ward pins" to restrict access to the keyway. These pins are situated in holes in the core and do not interact with the bitting of the key.

[[Master keying]] the V18 involves strategically removing one or more pins to create one or more mastered versions.  GOAL uses inactive, dummy key pins and drivers made of brass. They take the place of active pin stacks and do not interact with the key. Master key systems thus reduce the number of active pins.

The [[Lock#Lock_Designs|type of lock]] being picked and the preferences of the lockpicker will determine which type and style of lockpick used. In most cases, a [[Tension|tension tool]] is used with the pick to successfully pick the lock. Picks that are specifically designed for [[Raking|rake picking]] techniques as known as rakes.

The possession of lockpicks is [[Legal Issues|considered illegal]] in some parts of the world. Lockpicks are categorized as "burglary tools" in many places, but most laws do not consider them such until they are used with the intent to commit a crime.

== Types of Picks ==

The type and design of lockpicking tools varies greatly. Different [[Lock#Lock_designs|lock designs]] require different types of picks and [[Tension|tension tools]] to manipulate the internal components.

; [[Pin-tumbler]] picks

Pin-tumbler picks are typically flat, thin pieces of metal. The tip of the pick comes in various shapes designed to facilitate movement and feedback in the lock. Common handle materials are metal, heat shrink tubing, plastic, rubber, and wood.

Dimple picks use small, "flag" style picks that are rotated rather than raised. These are smaller than pin-tumbler picks and come in a variety of designs. Dimple rakes are also common. Traditional pin-tumbler picks can also be used to pick dimple locks.

; [[Disc-detainer]] picks

Disc-detainer picks typically use a 2-in-1 Hobbs style pick which provides independent torsion and manipulation controls. Some, such as the Ford Tibbe 6 disc lock have dedicated picks which allow manipulation and tension of each disc via a system of telescoped tubes.

; [[Lever]] picks

Lever picks came first in the form of bent pieces of wire as well as the traditional jigglers and skeleton keys, the latter of which were a hold-over from picks for warded lever locks. For the more advanced multi-lever locks, 2-in-1 Hobbs style picks were invented and refined, and are still common for non-curtained locks. Other methods include try-out keys, pin & cam systems and various means to read the lever number via the keyhole or, occasionally, elsewhere, via systems such as plasticine reader keys, rotational measurement devices and, especially for detainer lever locks, a steerable fibrescope which can optically decode the gate positions.

; [[Tubular]] picks

The simplest pick for a tubular lock is a tensioner and a straight piece of wire. Picking proceeds as with other lock types. More commonly, a dedicated pick is used, which has a wire for each pin arranged to match the 7, 8 etc. pins as well as a method for tensioning the lock. These are normally used to self-impression the lock, meaning that the tool will use the binding order of the lock to recreate the correct key without prior knowledge, and can be startlingly effective against locks that have no countermeasures to them. Against those with countermeasures, a dedicated pick such as the Peterson Pro1 is normally required which will allow each pick wire to be adjusted individually by hand.

The Interactive platform brings support for back and side pins. It has hardened steel inserts to prevent drilling and uses telescopic pins to increase the difficulty of picking the lock. Mul-T-Lock uses security pins to further increase the security of the lock.

Mul-T-Lock Keys are noticeably different from pin-tumbler keys due to the mechanism of the lock. It is similar to the [[Mul-T-Lock Classic]] but with the addition of a moving component inside the key used to deter unauthorized key duplication. In the Interactive+, the moving element in the key interacts with a passive pin which extends through the bottom of the plug into a divot in the shell, and is lifted as the plug is rotated. This lifts the element in the key, which can in turn lift the associated key pin to a level higher than maximum lift. Due to the differing shapes of the interactive element, keys for the Mul-T-Lock Interactive and Interactive+ are not interchangeable.

The Everest Primus uses six pin-tumblers and five sidebar finger pins. Unlike its ASSA counterpart, the Everest Primus does not provide any [[security pin]]s by default. There are 10 depths available for bottom (key) pins. Key pins are numbered 0-9 sized .165" to .300 with a step of .015". There are eight master pins numbered 2-8 sized 0.030" to 0.135" with a step of .015". Driver pins come in three sizes (1-3) from .235" to .165" with a step of .035". These drivers provide pseudo-balanced pin stacks; a 1 driver is used if the size of the key and master pin stack is 0-3, 2 if 4-6, and 3 if 7-9.
