Linus Yale, Jr. (04 April 1821, 25 December 1868) was an American inventor and manufacturer of locks. His most famous inventions are the modern rotary combination lock and modifications to his father's pin-tumbler lock mechanism, currently one of the most popular lock designs worldwide.
Life
Linus Yale, Jr. was born in Salisbury, New York. Yale Jr joined his father, Linus Yale, Sr., at his lock business in 1850. He introduced some combination safe and key-operated cylinder locks around 1862. His 1865 patent (48,475) for a pin-tumbler lock and key was a drastic improvment over previous models, and is the basis for pin-tumbler locks since.
