History

Joseph Bradford Sargent and his two brothers, George and Edward, operated a wholesale hardware business in New York City in the early 1800s, when they took an interest in one of their suppliers, the Peck and Walter Manufacturing Company of New Britain, Connecticut. The Sargent brothers bought full ownership of the firm in 1857. The brothers moved the factory to New Haven in 1864, and re-incorporated as Sargent & Co. The company continued to manufacture general hardware until World War I, where they shifted production to focus on items needed for the war effort. After the second world war, Sargent shifted the production to narrow the product offerings. They had been known as a high quality manufacturer of locks and door hardware, so they decided to concentrate on that niche. In 1965, they developed the Sargent Keso Security System that is still in use today. After 101 years of operation, Sargent & Co. moved their manufacturing operation to a new space closer to the New Haven harbor, where they continue to operate to this day. In 1967, the company was purchased from the Sargent family and stockholders by the Walter Kidde company. The company was then sold to several other financial groups, until they were purchased by the Swedish conglomerate Assa Abloy AB in 1996[1].
