Sargent & Greenleaf is an American lock manufacturer that produces medium and high security padlocks, lock cylinders, electronic locks, and safe locks. Sargent & Greneleaf is one of the oldest and well-known high-security lock manufacturers in the United States. They are best known for their electronic combination locks, mechanical safe locks, and high-security padlocks used by the United States military.
History
The James Sargent Lock Company was founded in 1857 by James Sargent.[1] In 1865, Sargent partnered with a Halbert Greenleaf, a former employer. The company was renamed to Sargent & Greenleaf and began operations in Rochester, NY. In 1869 the company got the first of many government contracts to design and produce safe locks for the U.S. Treasury Department.[2] During World War I and II they produced a wide variety of builder's hardware as well as many lock and safe designs. In 1974, S&G relocated to their current home of Nicholasville, Kentucky. In the late 1980s Sargent & Greenleaf began producing a variety of high-security padlocks for the U.S. government. Among these designs were the S&G 831 and S&G 833 models that use Medeco cylinders. Production of the popular 6120 electronic combination lock series began in 1993.
In 2005 Sargent & Greenleaf was acquired by The Stanley Works, an international tool and hardware manufacturer.
